3 Favorite Winter Soups + A New Year Reset

Winter is Vata-Kapha season. Since Vata is light, mobile and dry, while Kapha is heavy, slow and wet, you could almost think they are opposites. But they do have something in common – they are both cold! Brrr. This is the season for warm.

So if you are in the mood for warmth, and a post-holiday sweep, I give you my three favorite soups for winter, plus an easy one day winter reset (let’s not call it a cleanse… But a more delicious approach to self care).

Winter Harvest Soup: Butternut Squash Noodles, Broccolini, Baked Tofu in a Miso Broth

This comes together quickly if you already have broth, squash noodles, and baked tofu. I had help from the market, but you can make your own, for which I’ve also added recipes. Of course, any noodle will do – soba, rice, zucchini, pasta.

Seriously Sumptuous Celery Soup

According to Ayurveda, celery is astringent, light, dry and rough – making it like a nano scrub brush, helping to lighten and purify the body.

Celery is also a diuretic, and a nervine. It cleanses the blood and is good for urinogenital infections. Interestingly, it is also said to help cleanse the mind and emotions while improving perception. Increasing the element of ether, it enables mental space for meditation.

Clearly celery has strong healing benefits; however we should be mindful that celery has a cooling energy. To maximize its benefits and taste turn celery juice into celery soup!

Nazik’s Morrocan White Beans

A recipe I posted long ago but still make many times every winter. In fact, I started this new year with this super bowl of beans, bringing it to a New Year’s Chili party where it earned a prize, despite not really being a chili at all. Thank you Nazik!

Double the stock and it goes from a thick stew to a soup.
