This week we celebrate the light, in the festival of Diwali and the upcoming new moon.Diwali celebrations began yesterday with Dhanteras, honoring Sri Dhanvantari. Dhanvantari is said to have emerged during the Samudra Manthana, the churning of the seas. He rises holding a pot of amrita, the nectar of immortality, in one hand, and in the other the sacred text of Ayurveda.   Dhanvantari is considered to be the physician of the devas, and the archetypal embodiment of Ayurveda. So Dhanteras Day has become World Ayurveda Day, a day when I remember my teachers with deep gratitude. Dhanvantari is an avatar of Vishnu, Lakshmi’s consort. This marriage of truth, integrity, dharma, Vishnu’s energy to maintain and sustain with Lakshmi’s gifts of ease, flow, peace, balance, and all the nourishing energies of nature is what Ayurveda encapsulates. During Diwali, people around the world worship Lakshmi, the divine energy of abundance, fertility and beauty. I’ve always felt Lakshmi is the source energy of Ayurveda as she is the beauty and bounty of nature herself. Truly this marriage of truth, integrity, dharma, Vishnu’s energy to maintain and sustain with Lakshmi’s gifts of ease, flow, peace, balance, and all the nourishment of nature is what Ayurveda encapsulates - and what the world seems to really need right now. Repost from the brilliant @samadhi.collective :: DHANTERAS — today is the auspicious occasion of Dhanteras, or Dhanatrayodaśī in Sanskrit, a celebration of the deity Dhanvantari that precedes the festival of Diwali or Dīpāvali in Sanskrit. Dhanvantari is the deity of Āyurveda, health, and wellbeing, a manifestation of Viṣṇu, who arose during the “churning of the ocean” (samudramanthana), a famous episode found in the epic text Mahābhārata, where the gods and demons both churn an ocean of milk, bringing the amṛta or nectar of immortality possessed by Dhanvantari to the surface. Dhanvantari is revered for healing and longevity, and is iconographically represented with four arms, holding the pot of amṛta, the cakra or discus, śaṅkha or conch and a leech or medicinal herbs, representing his healing abilities. The following is the mantra for invocation of Dhanvantari: “oṃ namo bhagavate vāsudevāya dhanvantaraye amṛtakalaśa hastāya sarvāmayavināśanāya trailokyanāthāya śrī mahāviṣṇave namaḥ.” This mantra expresses Dhanvantari’s iconographic representation described above, alongside a description of his powerful brilliance, as the light he emanates is so bright that it destroys all ailments, suffering and disease.
