Today’s New Moon is in Punarvasu Nakshatra. It was together with the Sun in Gemini at exact degree this morning at 02:43am Pacific time (10:43 UTC). The word Punarvasu comes from Puna+Vasu, which means return, renewal, restoration or repetition - to make good again. Punarvasu means to start afresh after having once broken off, to start a new life, to come back from a distant land. It stands for freedom from restriction, and boundless space. > Not a surprise then that on July 14, 1789, the first Bastille Day, had the Sun and Mercury in Punarvasu. (Moon with Saturn in Pisces and an exalted Jupiter with Venus in Pushya.)Aditi, the Shakti associated with infinity and unboundedness is the deity of Punarvasu. Mother Aditi, “of whom the Gods are born”, is the repository of everything good - truth, generosity, magnanimity, purity, aristocracy, beauty and renown. Punarvasu’s symbol of a Quiver of Arrows is associated with a long-distance vision, with imagination and aiming into unknown. The Quiver is also symbolic of replenishment and home, so this is a very healing, restorative moon cycle. This will be a good time to rest up and prepare for the future. Punarvasu is philosophical, seeing the big picture, with energy and enthusiasm. With Mercury retrograde, in Gemini, so with the moon as it awakened again, now is a good time for writing, researching, reviewing, editing, also dreaming, envisioning, meditating, retreating. Punarvasu’s planetary ruler is Jupiter. It is Sattvic, Devic, and considered one of the most luminous of the Nakshatras. 🌙What is in your heart to heal?🌙 Do you allow yourself to rest? 🌙 What in your life is ready for needs renewal?🌙Is there a high and mighty vision this lunar cycle can help you realize? Now as I write, the Moon has moved over into Cancer. It remains in Punarvasu until 11:39am Pacific time, when it moves to Pushya Nakshatra, the blossoming of our renewal. It’s a sweet time. Let’s enjoy, and see what it brings. 🌙💛#jyotish #sidereal #vedic #vedicastrology newmoon ... See MoreSee Less

In the wake of yet another revelation of abuse by a prominent yoga teacher, and as Jupiter, the Guru, or great teacher, is exalted in Cancer, the sign of the Divine Mother, and we are at Amavasya, the dark night of the moon itself currently exalted - this feels like a good time to remember that many of the Vedic Rishis were women. Not anomalies or curiosities. They were participants in the very founding moment of one of the world’s great spiritual traditions. They brought to that tradition unique perspectives, voices and experiences that were irreducibly their own - the longing of Lopamudra, the suffering of Apala, the courage of Ghosa, the philosophical hunger of Gargi and Maitreyi, the priestly authority of Visvavara. In their hymns, one hears not merely ancient religion but something altogether more enduring: the sound of human beings reaching, with all their being, toward an eternal truth, that contains heart, humanity, compassion, and real, day-to-day life. To recover their memory is not an exercise in nostalgia. It is a correction of the historical record and a reminder that the heights of spiritual and intellectual life also belongs to women. You can read the full article at my Substack feed, link in bio and in comments. 💛—Primary sources: The Rigveda (particularly Mandalas 1, 5, 8, and 10), the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad, and the Vedic Anukramanika index. Modern scholarship: A.A. Macdonell, Stephanie Jamison, Kapila Vatsyayan have all contributed important analyses of the Rishikas.__#rishikas #whenwomenwereseers #womensages #wisewomen #auntieunderground ... See MoreSee Less
