Smooth Move Overnight Oats

Here on this blog the most common request I get is for breakfast ideas. I think we want to wake up inspired, nourished, feeling loved. I certainly do. What about you?

Overnight Oats are so easy, and so healthy. This is a no bake, no cook, no pressure recipe which comes together in minutes, and is ready when you are in the morning. You make it in a mason jar so it is also ready to go if you are one who takes your breakfast with you.

And, it helps encourage you to go! Loaded with fiber, and flavor, it helps you start your day smooth 🍃


Ayurvedically speaking, oats are in the sweet category of tastes. Oats are demulcent so they soothe the epithelial layer of the digestive tract, moistening a dry colon, which may be a Vata tendency, and soothing inflammation which can be a Pitta tendency.

Seeds are a bit sweet (their oils), but are primarily astringent. Astringent foods tone, and scrape. So while the oats moisten, seeds can help clear.

Add your sweet spices to stoke Agni, digestive fire, and you have a highly digestible, delicious nourishment to inspire your mornings, and help you get up and go.


SMOOTH MOVE OVERNIGHT OATS
Serves 2

You can use any plant milk, but I prefer coconut milk here. It makes a rich and creamy porridge. Pour in an inch of hot boiling water in the morning both to warm your oats, and to thin the coconut milk a bit. Otherwise it is muy ricco, like a pudding.

Ingredients
1 cup rolled oats
2 tablespoons chia seeds
1 tablespoons ground flax seed
2 cups plant milk
2 medjool dates or 2 tablespoons maple syrup
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon or cardamom
1 pinch pink or sea salt
Optional: 2 tablespoons almond butter

Topping ideas
Yogurt, toasted pumpkin seeds, pecans, almonds, cacao nibs
Note: No fruit, please especially don’t mix yogurt with fruit.

Instructions
In the evening, divide the oats and seeds equally into 2 mason jars. Put the rest of the ingredients into an electric blender and mix on high until completely liquified. Pour this mixture evenly into each mason jar. Seal the jars and shake. Store overnight at room temperature. In the morning, place each jar in a bowl of boiling hot water to warm it before serving. Add toppings and enjoy.

Dosha modifications
Vata or Kapha: Add an inch of boiling hot water to really warm it up before eating. You might also enjoy an added pinch of ginger. Kapha, double up on the cinnamon.
